Strike vote called for care centre workers in Victoria seeking modest improvements

May 19, 2017

BURNABY – BC Government and Service Employees Union (BCGEU) members working at Douglas Care Community in Victoria may soon find themselves behind the picket line. Following an impasse in negotiations for modest improvements to wages and benefits, the union has called a strike vote for Thursday May 25th.

“An agreement has been made with the employer on all non-monetary proposals, however their response to the union’s monetary proposals were completely unacceptable” says BCGEU president Stephanie Smith. “These hard-working members are seeking reasonable improvements and deserve a fair deal.”

Douglas Care Community is a private, for-profit residential care home in the James Bay neighbourhood in Victoria. The BCGEU represents 30 members at the care home, including licensed practical nurses, registered care aides, food service and dietary workers, and housekeepers.
